Pharmacogenetic testing benefits patients by predicting drug efficacy and risk of adverse drug reactions (ADRs). Pharmacogenetic biomarkers useful in clinical practice include drug-metabolizing enzyme and drug transporter genes and human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes. HLA genes, which are important molecules involved in human immunity, have long been analyzed for associations with ADRs, such as skin rash, drug-induced liver injury, and agranulocytosis. HLA is composed of many genes, each of which has dozens of different types (alleles), and many HLA alleles associated with ADRs have been reported. The odds ratios in the association of HLA alleles range from approximately 5 to several thousand, indicating a very large impact on the risk of ADRs. Thus, HLA genetic testing prior to initiation of drug therapy is expected to make a significant contribution to avoiding ADRs, but to demonstrate the clinical utility, it is necessary to prospectively show the effects of medical interventions based on the test results. We conducted the GENCAT study, a prospective, multicenter, single-arm clinical trial to investigate the impact of a therapeutic intervention based on the HLA-A*31:01 test on the incidence of carbamazepine-induced skin rash. HLA-A*31:01-positive patients were treated with an alternative drug such as valproic acid, and the study showed an approximately 60% reduction in the incidence of carbamazepine-induced skin rash. It is expected that the genetic test, which has demonstrated clinical utility, will lead to the establishment of safer and more appropriate stratified medicine by reflecting the information in clinical practice guidelines.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the minimum interaction between different antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and meropenem (MEPM) for clinical treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The data of 91 patients enrolled in the neurology department from January 2020 to March 2023 for clinical trials were measured and observed. Self-controlled studies were conducted to monitor the trough concentrations of valproic acid (VPA), carbamazepine (CBZ) and levotiracetam (LEV) before and after MEPM usage. Relevant indicators of liver and kidney function were also monitored. RESULTS: The serum VPA trough concentrations were 36.25±8.22 µg/ml at 24±12 h and 34.99±11.17 µg/ml at 96±12 h after MEPM use; the difference was significant (p<0.05). Decreased CBZ trough concentrations were also identified after MEPM usage (96±12 h), whereas LEV trough concentrations were not affected. An increased liver injury rate (χ2 =8.744, p<0.05) and a decreased kidney injury rate (χ2 =5.393, p<0.05) were found in the VPA group only. CONCLUSIONS: The interaction between VPA and MEPM decreased serum VPA concentrations, increased liver injury rates, and decreased kidney injury rates. In addition, the co-administration of MEPM and CBZ reduced serum CBZ concentrations. Clinicians should be aware of this potential interaction and closely monitor the relevant biochemical indices and number of seizures.

Nodding Syndrome is a poorly understood epilepsy disorder in sub-Saharan Africa. The cause(s) of the disease, risk factors and long-term outcomes are unknown or controversial. The objectives of this study were to describe the long-term clinical course and treatment outcomes of individuals suffering from Nodding Syndrome. In addition, we aimed to provide a comprehensive characterization of the epileptological and social features of patients with Nodding Syndrome. From 11/2014 to 4/2015, we conducted a hospital-based, cross-sectional and observational study in Mahenge, Tanzania. Seventy-eight individuals (female:male ratio: 40:38, age at examination: 21.1 ± 6.39 (SD) years) have been enrolled, of whom 38 (49%) had also been examined in 2005 and in 2009. The 10-year clinical course analysis of this revisited subgroup revealed a calculated case fatality of 0.8-2.3%. Progressive physical or cognitive deterioration has not been observed in any of the 78 individuals and more than half of the people studied (38/69; 55%) managed to live and work independently. 14/78 individuals (18%) were seizure-free, (no head nodding, no other seizure types), 13 of whom were taking antiseizure medication. Phenytoin was more effective against head nodding seizures (14/19 (74%)) than monotherapy with other available antiseizure medication (phenobarbitone 12/25 (48%) and carbamazepine 7/22 (32%), p = 0.02, chi-square test). Our ten-year clinical outcome data show that Nodding Syndrome is not a fatal disease, however, the response to treatment is worse than in epilepsy patients in general. Phenytoin may be more effective than carbamazepine and phenobarbitone, but further studies are needed to confirm this observation.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy and safety of pregabalin and carbamazepine in patients with central post-stroke pain (CPSP). METHODS: Patients included in the study were randomly assigned to either flexible-dose pregabalin treatment group or carbamazepine treatment group. The primary efficacy variable was face visual analog scale (F-VAS), the second efficacy assessment was used to assess the effect of treatment on mental health by Hamilton anxiety scale (HAMA) and Hamilton depression scale (HAMD). RESULTS: The mean baseline pain score F-VAS was 6.47 in the pregabalin group and 6.58 in carbamazepine treatment group. F-VAS was significantly lower in the pregabalin group (1.64) than (3.94) carbamazepine treatment group after treatment. Pregabalin was significantly superior to carbamazepine in endpoint assessments on the HAMA and HAMD after treatment. F-VAS and HAMD were showed efficacy as early as week 2 and maintained for whole duration of the study. The average pregabalin dose in the 12-week study was 214.6 (150-375) mg/day. The mean dose (range) of carbamazepine received by the patients was 275.0 (200-400) mg/day. Mild or moderate, typically transient, somnolence and dizziness were the most common adverse events (AES). The differences of the side effects between the two groups were not significant. CONCLUSIONS: Pregabalin, but not carbamazepine, may be effective in improving F-VAS, HAMA and HAMD in patients with CPSP.

In the past, rifampicin was well-established as strong index CYP3A inducer in clinical drug-drug interaction (DDI) studies. However, due to identified potentially genotoxic nitrosamine impurities, it should not any longer be used in healthy volunteer studies. Available clinical data suggest carbamazepine as an alternative to rifampicin as strong index CYP3A4 inducer in clinical DDI studies. Further, physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling is a tool with increasing importance to support the DDI risk assessment of drugs during drug development. CYP3A4 induction properties and the safety profile of carbamazepine were investigated in two open-label, fixed sequence, crossover clinical pharmacology studies in healthy volunteers using midazolam as a sensitive index CYP3A4 substrate. Carbamazepine was up-titrated from 100 mg twice daily (b.i.d.) to 200 mg b.i.d., and to a final dose of 300 mg b.i.d. for 10 consecutive days. Mean area under plasma concentration-time curve from zero to infinity (AUC(0-∞)) of midazolam consistently decreased by 71.8% (ratio: 0.282, 90% confidence interval (CI): 0.235-0.340) and 67.7% (ratio: 0.323, 90% CI: 0.256-0.407) in study 1 and study 2, respectively. The effect was adequately described by an internally developed PBPK model for carbamazepine which has been made freely available to the scientific community. Further, carbamazepine was safe and well-tolerated in the investigated dosing regimen in healthy participants. The results demonstrated that the presented design is appropriate for the use of carbamazepine as alternative inducer to rifampicin in DDI studies acknowledging its CYP3A4 inductive potency and safety profile.

Some children exposed at conception to the antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) phenytoin (PHT), phenobarbital (PB), and carbamazepine (CBZ) have changes in their midface and fingers. It has been suggested that the anticonvulsant-exposed child with these subtle changes in facial features (the "anticonvulsant face") has a greater likelihood of having deficits in IQ in comparison with children exposed to the same anticonvulsants who do not have these features. 115 AED-exposed children (40, PHT; 34, PB; and 41, CBZ) between 6.5 and 16 years of age and 111 unexposed children matched by sex, race, and year in school were evaluated. The evaluations were (WISC-III), physical examination with measurements of facial features and digits and photographs. The AED-exposed children had cephalometric radiographs, but not the unexposed. Each parent had a similar examination of face and hands plus tests of intelligence. These AED-exposed children showed an increased frequency of a short nose and anteverted nares, features of the "anticonvulsant face." Lateral skull radiographs showed a decrease in the angle between the anterior cranial base and nasal bone, which produces anteverted nares. Mean IQs were significantly lower on one or more IQ measures for the children with these facial features. Shortening of the distal phalanges and small fingernails correlated with the presence of a short nose in that child. The findings in 115 children exposed at conception to either phenytoin, phenobarbital, or carbamazepine, as monotherapy, confirmed the hypothesis that those with a short nose and anteverted nares had a lower IQ than exposed children without those features.

Extensive scientific evidence consistently demonstrates the clinical validity and utility of HLA-B*15:02 pre-screening in averting severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs), namely Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, associated with carbamazepine or oxcarbazepine usage. Current practice guidelines and drug labeling actively advocate for pharmacogenetic pre-screening before initiating these antiepileptic drugs (AED), with particular emphasis on patients of Asian descent. However, there is a potential need to strengthen compliance with these recommendations. This retrospective study aimed to describe the pharmacogenetic pre-screening, documentation, and SCARs incidence for patients of Asian ancestry initiated on carbamazepine or oxcarbazepine at a large Northeastern USA healthcare system. Between 1 July 2016 and August 1, 2021, 27 patients with documented Asian heritage in the electronic health record (EHR) were included. The overall rate of HLA-B*15:02 pre-screening before carbamazepine or oxcarbazepine initiation was 4%. None who underwent pharmacogenetic pre-screening carried the associated HLA-B risk allele, and no SCARs were reported. Notably, pharmacogenetic results were not discretely entered into the EHR, and the results were only found as attached documents in the miscellaneous section of the EHR. There remains a significant opportunity for improving HLA-B*15:02 pre-screening for patients starting carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine to prevent SCARs in the USA.

Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome is a potentially fatal cutaneous hypersensitivity reaction commonly precipitated by antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). Cross-reactivity among aromatic AEDs is well-documented, but between aromatic and nonaromatic AEDs. We report a patient with severe DRESS syndrome precipitated by aromatic AED carbamazepine with recrudescence approximately 2 weeks after substitution with nonaromatic AED levetiracetam. The patient was treated with high-dose corticosteroids and switched to the benzodiazepine AED clobazam. At follow-up appointment several weeks later, the patient's rash, liver injury, and eosinophilia had resolved.

OBJECTIVE: The neonatal and infantile period is the age group with the highest incidence of epilepsy, in which gene variants in sodium and potassium channels are an important etiology, so the sodium channel blocker class of antiseizure medications may be effective in the treatment of early onset epilepsy. This study aimed to summarize the efficacy and tolerability of oxcarbazepine (OXC) in the treatment of focal epilepsy in neonates and infants under 3 months of age. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of children with focal epilepsy onset within 3 months of age and treated with OXC in a tertiary pediatric epilepsy center in China was conducted. The efficacy, tolerability and influencing factors of OXC were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 50 patients were enrolled, with a median age of epilepsy onset of 11.5 (2, 42) days. There were 32 cases of early infantile developmental and epileptic encephalopathy, 10 cases of self-limited neonatal or neonatal-infantile epilepsy, and 8 cases of focal epilepsy that could not be classified as epileptic syndrome. The median age of application of OXC was 47 (31, 66) days. The median follow-up time was 16.5 (10, 25) months, with 7 deaths. Thirty-eight cases (76.0 %) were effective with OXC treatment, including 28 cases (56.0 %) achieved seizure freedom. Of the 34 cases whose pathogenesis involved genetic factors, 19 cases with sodium/ potassium channel gene variants had higher effective and seizure-free rates than those with other gene variants. The most common adverse event was transient hyponatremia. 2 cases had rash and 2 cases had abnormal electrocardiogram, 3 of which discontinued OXC. SIGNIFICANCE: This single-center retrospective study suggests that OXC is effective and tolerable for the treatment of focal epilepsy in neonates and infants under 3 months of age. The efficacy of OXC is better in patients with sodium/ potassium channel gene variants.

PURPOSE: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is often associated with drug-resistant seizures. We evaluated the efficacy and tolerability of lacosamide (LCM) versus controlled-release carbamazepine (CBZ-CR) monotherapy in adults with newly diagnosed TLE. METHODS: Exploratory post hoc analysis of patients with temporal focus of localization (indicated as the only localization focus) in a double-blind, noninferiority, phase 3 trial (SP0993; NCT01243177) in patients aged ≥ 16 years with newly diagnosed epilepsy randomized 1:1 to LCM or CBZ-CR monotherapy. RESULTS: Of 886 treated patients in this trial, temporal lobe focus of localization (TLE) was reported as the single focus for 287 (32.4%) patients (LCM 134, CBZ-CR 153). A similar proportion of patients with TLE on LCM (82  [61.2%]) and CBZ-CR (99  [64.7%]) completed the trial. Kaplan-Meier estimates for 6- and 12-month seizure freedom at the last evaluated dose level (stratified by number of seizures in the 3 months before screening  [≤2 or >2 seizures]) were similar with LCM and CBZ-CR (6 months overall: 88.7% and 89.7%; 12 months overall: 78.3% and 81.7%). Treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) were reported by fewer patients on LCM (73.9%) than CBZ-CR (81.0%). Drug-related TEAEs (assessed by the investigator) were reported in 41.8% of patients on LCM and 52.3% of patients on CBZ-CR; 11.2% of patients on LCM and 15.0% on CBZ-CR discontinued due to TEAEs. CONCLUSION: Lacosamide was efficacious and generally well tolerated as monotherapy in patients with TLE with efficacy outcomes comparable with CBZ-CR, and fewer patients on LCM reported any TEAEs, drug-related TEAEs, or discontinued due to TEAEs.

Drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DiHS)/drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) is a type of drug eruption that causes multiorgan disorders after the administration of certain drugs such as anticonvulsants. Herein, we report the case of a 66-year-old man with DiHS/DRESS complicated by fulminant type 1 diabetes (FT1D), shock, and cardiac involvement who was treated conservatively without systemic corticosteroid administration. He had taken carbamazepine for trigeminal neuralgia for 7 weeks until he noticed eruptions on his trunk. Two days after admission, he developed diabetic ketoacidosis, resulting in hypovolemic shock. The patient was diagnosed with FT1D, and insulin was administered. Additionally, the patient had a fever over 38°C, elevated white blood cells (>20 000/µL), liver dysfunction, atypical lymphocytes, and lymphadenopathy, but no evidence of viral reactivation. The lymphocyte transformation test for carbamazepine was positive, and human leukocyte antigen typing revealed the A31:01 haplotype, a risk factor for carbamazepine-induced cutaneous adverse drug reactions. Collectively, a diagnosis of atypical DiHS and a definitive case of DRESS was made. Moreover, myocardial dysfunction wall motion was observed. A close examination revealed mild coronary artery stenosis, leading to a diagnosis of type 2 myocardial infarction due to relative ischemia. The patient was carefully monitored without systemic corticosteroid administration because both clinical findings and laboratory data peaked on the same day. The patient's eruption and general condition improved, and he was discharged 4 weeks later. While most cases of DiHS/DRESS with cardiac involvement present with myocarditis, the possibility of ischemic heart disease should be considered in patients with cardiac involvement under shock.

Both Stevens-johnson syndrome (SJS) and Toxic-epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are generally medication-induced pathological conditions that mostly affect the epidermis and mucus membranes. Nearly 1 to 2 patients per 1,000,000 population are affected annually with SJS and TEN, and sometimes these maladies can cause serious life-threatening events. The reported death rates for SJS range from 1 to 5%, and 25 to 35% for TEN. The mortality risk may even be higher among elderly patients, especially in those who are affected by a significant amount of epidermal detachment. More than 50% of TEN patients who survive the illness may experience long-term lower quality of life and lesser life expectancy. The clinical and histopathological conditions of SJS and TEN are characterized by mucocutaneous discomfort, haemorrhagic erosions, erythema, and occasionally severe epidermal separation that can turn into ulcerative patches and dermal necrosis. The relative difference between SJS and TEN is the degree of ulcerative skin detachment, making them two extremes of a spectrum of severe cutaneous adverse drug-induced reactions (cADRs). In the majority of cases, serious drug-related hypercreativities are considered the main cause of SJS & TEN; however, herpes simplex virus and Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections may also produce similar type clinical conditions. The aetiology of a lesser number of cases and their underlying causative factors remain unknown. Among the drugs with a 'greater likelihood' of causing TEN & SJS are carbamazepine (CBZ), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, phenytoin, aminopenicillins, allopurinol, cephalosporins, sulphonamides, antibiotics, quinolones, phenobarbital, and NSAIDs of the oxicam variety. There is also a strong genetic link between the occurrence of SJS and IEN in the Han Chinese population. Such genetic association is based on the human leukocyte antigen (HLA-B*1502) and the co-administration of carbamazepine. The diagnosis of SJS is made mostly on the gross observations of clinical symptoms, and confirmed by the histopathological examination of dermal biopsies of the patients. The differential diagnoses consist of the exclusion of Pemphigus vulgaris, bullous pemphigoid, linear IgA dermatosis, paraneoplastic pemphigus, disseminated fixed bullous drug eruption, acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP), and staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS). The management of SJS & TEN is rather difficult and complicated, and there is sometimes a high risk of mortality in seriously inflicted patients. Urgent medical attention is needed for early diagnosis, estimation of the SCORTEN prognosis, identification and discontinuation of the causative agent as well as highdose injectable Ig therapeutic interventions along with specialized supportive care. Historical aspects, aetiology, mechanisms, and incidences of SJS and TEN are discussed. An update on the genetic occurrence of these medication-related hypersensitive ailments as well as different therapy options and management of patients is also provided.

Stevens-Johnson syndrome is a type of severe drug eruption, which is characterized by rapid onset and rapid progress. If not treated in time, it can develop into toxic epidermal necrolysis, even life-threatening. Common sensitizing drugs include sulfa, carbamazepine, etc. In China, reports and studies of carbamazepine causing Stevens-Johnson syndrome mainly focus on the HLA-B * 1502 gene, and there are no reports of HLA-A * 3101 gene positive. We reported a patient who got Stevens-Johnson syndrome with HLA-A * 3101 gene positive caused by carbamazepine. She took carbamazepine for trigeminal neuralgia and had never taken the drug before. After 2 weeks, papules and edematous target-like erythema gradually appeared on the trunk and limbs, surface blisters and scabs, and the oral, eyes, and vulvar mucosa appeared erosion, accompanied by fever and pain, with an area of about 3% exfoliation. She was diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson syndrome and admitted to Peking University Third Hospital on March 24, 2020. After admission, in order to identify the sensitizing drugs, We performed a genetic test on her for carbamazepine-related drugs. The results showed that the HLA-A * 3101 gene was positive, and the HLA-B * 1502 and HLA-B * 5801 genes were negative. In terms of treatment, the patient was systematically given a single intravenous infusion of 300 mg of infliximab, and symptomatic treatment and care of the oral, eye, and vulvar mucosa. After 6 days, the rash on the trunk and limbs subsided, and the mucosa returned to normal and was discharged from the hospital. Retrieving domestic and foreign literature, it is not uncommon to report that carbamazepine causes drug eruption, including severe drug eruption, and there are obvious ethnic differences in the pathogenicity of HLA genotyping. In China and Asia, stu-dies on carbamazepine causing Stevens-Johnson syndrome emphasized that the adverse reactions were strongly related to the HLA-B * 1502 gene. However, there is a strong correlation with HLA-A * 3101 gene in people suffering from the disease in Europe and Japan. In this case report, the HLA-B * 1502 gene was negative and the HLA-A * 3101 gene was positive. This is the first domestic report that carba-mazepine causes HLA-A * 3101 positive for Stevens-Johnson syndrome. This report reminds that HLA-A * 3101 gene testing should be taken seriously besides HLA-B * 1502 gene.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is one of the most common chronic neurological disorders, affecting more than 50 million people globally. In this review we summarised the evidence from randomised controlled trials of gabapentin used as monotherapy for the treatment of focal epilepsy, both newly diagnosed and drug-resistant, with or without secondary generalisation. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of gabapentin monotherapy for people with epileptic focal seizures with and without secondary generalisation. METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Register of Studies (CRS Web) and MEDLINE (Ovid, 1946 to 24 February 2020) on 25 February 2020. CRS Web includes randomised or quasi-randomised controlled trials from PubMed, Embase, ClinicalTrials.gov, the World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRA), and the specialised registers of Cochrane Review Groups including the Cochrane Epilepsy Group. We also searched several Russian databases, reference lists of relevant studies, ongoing trials registers, conference proceedings, and we contacted trial authors. RESULTS: We found five randomised controlled trials (3167 participants) comparing gabapentin to other antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and differing doses of gabapentin as monotherapy for newly diagnosed focal epilepsy and drug- resistant focal epilepsy with or without secondary generalisation. Two review authors independently applied the inclusion criteria, assessed trial quality, risk of bias, and extracted data. We used the GRADE approach to assess the certainty of evidence and present seven patient-important outcomes in the "Summary of findings" tables. The quality of evidence was very low to moderate due to poor reporting quality, poor trial design, and other risks of bias, such as selective presentation of findings and potential heavy industry input. Better quality research may change our certainty in the effect estimates. None of the included trials reported on the number of people with 50% or greater reduction in seizures and time to withdrawal (retention time) in an extractable way. Gabapentin-treated participants were more likely to withdraw from treatment for any cause (285/539) than those treated with lamotrigine, oxcarbazepine, or topiramate pooled together (695/1317) (RR 1.13, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.25; 3 studies, 1856 participants; moderate-certainty evidence), but not carbamazepine. Fewer people treated with gabapentin withdrew from treatment owing to adverse events (190/525) than those treated with carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, or topiramate (479/1238), (RR 0.79, 95% CI 0.69 to 0.91; 1763 participants, 3 studies; moderate-certainty evidence), but not lamotrigine. CONCLUSION: Gabapentin as monotherapy probably controlled seizures no better and no worse than comparator AEDs (lamotrigine, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, and topiramate). Compared to carbamazepine, gabapentin was probably better in retaining people in studies and preventing withdrawals due to adverse events. The most common side effects associated with gabapentin were ataxia (poor co-ordination and unsteady gait), dizziness, fatigue, and drowsiness.

Aim: Examining the association between HLA-A/B alleles and different carbamazepine (CBZ)-induced cutaneous adverse reactions in the Chinese population. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis of case-control studies was conducted. A systematic search was conducted of PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, National Knowledge Infrastructure, the Chinese Biomedical Literature database and Wanfang Digital Periodicals. Results: 23 studies with a total of 1174 patients were included. In the Han population, HLA-B*15:02 is significantly associated with the increased risk of CBZ-related Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis, and this correlation was not related to geographic distribution. HLA-A*31:01, B*38:02 are associated with CBZ-related maculopapular eruption in South Han population. HLA-A*31:01 is associated with CBZ-DRESS in Taiwan Han population. Conclusion: HLA-B*15:02, A*31:01 and B*38:02 genes were found to be involved in the occurrence of CBZ cutaneous adverse reactions in Han Chinese.

A patient with epilepsy on carbamazepine developed a rapidly progressive cerebellar syndrome. Serial MRI showed progressive posterior fossa T2/fluid attenuated inversion recovery hyperintensity with gadolinium enhancement. Standard cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis was normal. Detection of John Cunningham virus DNA in the CSF confirmed progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). The only evidence of immune disfunction was hypogammaglobulinaemia and longstanding lymphopenia. After cessation of carbamazepine, the lymphocyte count and immunoglobulin levels returned to normal and the PML resolved, with good clinical recovery. No specific treatments for PML were given. We hypothesise that PML in this case was due to carbamazepine-induced prolonged mild immunosuppression with reconstitution of the immune system after carbamazepine cessation, resulting in recovery from PML. Effects of anticonvulsants on immune function and infection risk may contribute to epilepsy-related morbidity and mortality. Further investigation is needed to determine the frequency of immune dysfunction and infections in patients treated with anticonvulsants such as carbamazepine and whether interventions could reduce infection risk.

RESUMO

A prospective longitudinal study was conducted to assess the Apo B100/A1 ratio as a marker of cardiovascular risk in children with epilepsy aged 5-14 years on long-term anti-seizure medication monotherapy with either sodium valproate, oxcarbazepine, or levetiracetam. Apo B100/A1 ratio showed an increase after six months of monotherapy with oxcarbazepine (P=0.05).
